As part of working towards achieving an Active Flag, our school took part in the Run Around Ireland Challenge. By doing this, we committing yourselves to a 4-week run/walk or stroll program. To succeed, every class was encouraged to build at least one running break into each school day. Our Active Flag coordinators, Ms Hassett and Ms Mc Carthy designed a lap around our school yard, where each lap = 1Km.
Active Flag supported us by giving us the following:
1. A map of Ireland’s famous landmarks
2. A laminated class challenge chart where you can tick off each landmark as you run to it
3. A laminated Progress Chart where you can record your progress daily and weekly
At the start of the challenge, each class worked out the distance from our school here in Shanagarry, East Cork to all the different landmarks on the map and wrote the distance on the sheet provided. This was an excellent way for children to learn about some of Ireland’s most famous landmarks. Over the next 4 weeks, our aim is to run to all of these places without leaving our school yard. The teachers emphasised over and over again that working together as a team is by far the best way to complete as many laps as possible each day. Our motto is:
