Active Flag

Our Mission

  • To Get More Active, More Often

  • To Achieve an Active Flag for our School

What is an Active School?

An ACTIVE School is a school where physical activity is valued, promoted and enjoyed by all.

Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education initiative supported by Healthy Ireland, and part of the National Physical Activity Plan which aims to get students more active on a daily basis.  It is a whole-school initiative so everybody's (students, teachers and parents) encouragement, involvement and participation is essential.  The Active School Flag aims to promote health and well-being in schools. The flag is awarded to schools to strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.

Well Being

In a curricular context, the theme of wellbeing is central to Aistear, which describes wellbeing in terms of children being confident, healthy and happy. Aspects of wellbeing are also present in Social, Personal, and Health Education (SPHE) and Physical Education (PE).  Click the link to view the Wellbeing Indicators as used by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA)

Our School Active Flag Motto...

Serious discussions and debating took place in all classes on what the School Logo should be.

  • From learning about the aims and importance of the Active Flag,
  • benefits of the Active Flag,
  • the inclusion of everyone,
  • and most importantly to all the fun we are having in participating in the activities

This is a selection of the artwork designed by some of our Fifth and Sixth Class Student to illustrate our School Active Flag Logo

Meet our Active Flag Committee

Our committee comprises of 2 teachers, Ms Marie Hassett and Ms Caroline Mc Carthy and representatives from each class from Juniors to Sixth Class.  The committee are constantly busy planning lots of new, exciting and fun ways to keep our school community healthy and active while striving for inclusiveness for all.

Ongoing Activities that we do throughout the School Year

  • Athletics - Every day, each class take turns and run around the School Grounds.

How may laps of the year did you do today?

  • GAA - Children from 1st to 6th Class have weekly training with trainers from our local club, Russell Rovers

  • Sciath Na Scol - Last year, 2002 we competed in the Sciath na Scol, we entered a Girls Football Team and they did very well.  They reached the semi-final stage of their group.

  • Zumba - Frank joins us for a 30min high impact, energetic Zumba Class once a week for 6 weeks.

  • Swimming - Weekly swimming lessons of Juniors to Sixth Class in Aura Leisure Center Youghal for

       6 weeks.

  • Gymnastics - Claire a trained gymnastic instructor from Salto comes and completes a 40mins gymnastic classes once a week for a block of 6 weeks.

  • Fun Fitness - every year we do a different programme from Fun Fitness.  This year did BoxAerobics which was be another 6 week block.  Our boxing programme is customised to cater for individual needs and abilities in primary and secondary school settings. Our goal during this programme is to teach the fundamentals of boxing while having fun and incorporates some elements of dance. The course layout is so children will have an understanding of technique and footwork. Building balance, coordination and movement.  There is no sparring work involved but typically children will get to use boxing gloves and focus pads which are usually popular.  As this programme is delivered with music and a beat, it is another fun way to cover the Dance Strand of the PE Curriculum!

  • Cork City Sports - we also compete in the Cork City Sports on a yearly basis.  This year we carried out the races in February as the runners had to be sent into Cork City Sports.  The Cork City Sports takes place this year on the 1st of June 2023.
